Project Overview: VOLT Sumo War Bot
VOLT is an advanced, high-performance combat robotics project designed for competitive Sumo War tournaments. Built to deliver maximum pushing power, structural durability, and fail-safe communication links, VOLT combines heavy-duty mechanical engineering with a multi-layered, redundant wireless control architecture.
Key Technical Specifications
Redundant Wireless Communication Architecture
To eliminate connection dropouts and signal interference common in high-density competitive environments, VOLT features a custom-engineered Triple-Layer Hybrid Failover Communication System: Primary Link (nRF24L01+ Transceiver): High-speed, low-latency RF communication for real-time control inputs. Secondary Link (Bluetooth Low Energy - BLE 5.2): Automatic fallback mode if 2.4 GHz RF interference or packet loss occurs. Tertiary Link (ESP-NOW): High-reliability peer-to-peer wireless protocol that acts as the final emergency failover layer. Switching Capabilities: Features both automatic real-time auto-failover (detects packet loss or jamming) and manual override via dedicated toggle switches on the custom transmitter.
Custom Handheld Transmitter
Designed and assembled from the ground up for ergonomic control and real-time operational feedback: Processing & Core: Powered by a dual-MCU setup featuring a standard ESP32 and an ESP32-C3 Super Mini micro-controller. Inputs & Tactile Control: Dual 2-axis analog joysticks for precision steering and throttle control, 2 push buttons for tactical actions/modes, and 2 heavy-duty toggle switches for system arming and manual communication layer selection. Telemetry & Display: Integrated mini OLED display providing real-time signal strength (RSSI), battery voltage levels, active connection protocol, and system diagnostics. Power Supply: Powered by a dual 18650 Li-ion battery pack configuration ensuring extended operational life during tournament heats.
On-Board Brain & Power Management
Custom PCB Mainboard: A custom-designed main circuit board integrated into the bot's chassis, powered by an Espressif ESP32-H2 PCB Design Board (supporting BLE 5.2 and Zigbee 3.0 protocols) for ultra-fast processing and signal reception. Motor Control: Driven by a SmartElex 15D Dual Channel DC Motor Driver, capable of delivering up to 30A peak current per channel using PWM speed control. Drivetrain & Traction: Equipped with high-torque planetary gear motors coupled with custom high-grip rubber tires engineered to maximize friction against the dohyo surface and crush opponent resistance.
